In 1995 Leonora Gregory-Collura first coined the term neuro-physiological interruption – NPI in effort to more accurately describe the internal process many autistic people experience and exhibit when triggered into a state of ‘overload’.
It is still common practice to describe autistic people as having a ‘meltdown’, ‘tantrum’ etc. Describing the process in this way is to assume that what the autistic individual is experiencing is nothing more than an emotional outburst or wilful desire to get their way.
The first video in our series What is an NPI centers around a group of autistic teens and young adults discussing their understanding of the process.
